Bible Studies - God

I Am = God = Jesus?

All Bible texts are from the King James Version

In this study we will look at who called Himself "I AM", and what the "I AM" will do for those who love and obey Him, and those who do not love and disobey Him.

Firstly who is "I AM"?

"And God said unto Moses, *I AM* THAT *I AM*: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." Exodus 3:14.

"*I am* the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images." Isaiah 42:8.

"For *I am* the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee." Isaiah 43:3.

"*I am* the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King." Isaiah 43:15.

"Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, *I am* the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;" Isaiah 44:24.

"Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; *I am* the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go." Isaiah 48:17.

These Scriptures tell us that "I AM" is the name of the Lord God, the Creator, Saviour and Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, and who brought the children of Israel up out of Egyptian slavery into the promised land of milk and honey. But none of them specifically state that "I AM" is Jesus. To show this we need to look at a few more Scriptures.

"And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him . . . " John 20:28, 29.

"And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:" Ephesians 3:9.

"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ" Titus 2:13.

"Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob." Isaiah 60:16.

Thomas called Jesus, "My Lord and my God"; Paul in Ephesians says He created all things making Jesus the Creator; in Titus Paul calls Jesus "our Saviour"; and Isaiah says that the Lord is "they Saviour and they Redeemer, the might one of Jacob" (Jacob's name was changed to Israel.

So putting all these texts together we can clearly see that some of the different names / titles for the One person are:-

I AM
the Lord
Thy God
The Holy One of Israel
thy Saviour
the Creator of Israel
thy Redeemer
Jesus Christ
